ANZAC Day

Tossing the Two Up Coins

The Two Up Ring

Popey - Bowls Legend of NSW

ANZAC Day, like Remembrance Day in the UK is a day where the nation remembers the men and women that fought in various wars for their country. In Australia everyone gets the day off work which is a great start. The dead and the brave are then remembered by attending a dawn service and then going on the piss all day. You drink till you drop and on your way you play some "Two Up". In simple terms "Two Up" is heads or tails. A ring is drawn in pubs and clubs all over the land and you bet heads or tails with the person next to you. And so on.... I followed tradition and did all of the above apart from the dawn service - decided that his would be a good time to go surfing as there would be a fair few not in the water that would normally be there. These photos were taken at the Paddington Bowling Club.

Freshwater Beach

I was on my way for a surf down at Freshwater beach, actually got to the waters edge and was about to paddle out. The sun was just coming up and the sky was bright orange so I decided to turn back and grab my camera.

The background music is by Charles Mingus and is a track called "solo dancer", which is what the surfers are in this film. The standard of surfing varies in this film, I didn’t cut out the obvious novice surfers because the film isn’t about just filming the best, I was more interested in the harmony with the sea. Like Jazz, improvisation, timing and harmony is required.

Click on the link below, be patient with the download the films 3 mins long.

Rossco at Deewhy Point

Whilst taking her in doors and the nipper for a walk I bumped into Ross at Deewhy Point. I had my video camera with me and enough juice in the batteries to capture him surfing a couple of little crumbley waves at the point. Click on the link to watch the video (depending on your connection it takes a couple of mins to load)
